The Season of Change

It’s the first day of fall break and I’m in my backyard, listening to the rain and the sound of the mesquite tree swaying in the breeze. It’s eight o’clock in the morning and I have the whole day ahead of me.

Last week at work, a fellow teacher asked me what I was going to do over break. You know that moment when you take the first sip of a perfect cup of hot chocolate on a cold day and you feel it warm you from the inside out? That’s how it felt when I smiled and said, “I’m going to write.”

Since January, I’ve been taking classes towards my master’s degree in education, and by coincidence the final term ended at exactly the same time fall break began. I enjoyed my program, but it was an intense nine months that required a substantial amount of weekly hours dedicated to research and scholarly writing.

With my final capstone project submitted, I am now free to fully return to the kind of writing I love. And what better time to do that than the season of change, when darkness begins to linger, when the world gets a little quieter, when I can light a candle, pull on a sweater, and open my notebook to another blank page.
